On Monday, the Delaware Public Health District issued an alert following an increase in cases and outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease in the area.
The agency says there have been cases and outbreaks, particularly in day care centers, schools and among school-aged children since the beginning of last month.
Hand, foot and mouth disease is a very contagious and common illness that causes fever, mouth sores and skin rash, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The virus mostly affects infants and children, but older adolescents and adults can become infected.
