Addressing worker wellbeing is a leadership imperative in the pressure-packed construction and aggregates industries. The workforce and their families are facing increasing challenges of mental health, substance misuse, opioid overdose, and suicide risk. These risks are real. Mental health challenges impact both human and financial capital risk management. Learn how leading companies are tackling these challenges head-on by focusing on culture, stigma reduction, and improving access to care and support.
Cal Beyer, CWP, NAC is the Sr. Director of SAFE Workplaces for national nonprofit SAFE Project (SAFE stands for Stop the Addiction Fatality Epidemic). Cal is a catalyst and advocate for workplace mental health, recovery and wellbeing. Cal helped launch the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention in 2016 while working as Director of Risk Management for an aggregates producer and paving contractor in the Pacific Northwest. Previously Beyer worked in national risk management and safety/health consultant, manager and action leader roles for construction teams for two national insurance companies. He has been dedicated to construction and industrial manufacturing since 1996. Recognized as a Top 25 Newsmaker for 2016 by Engineering-News Record and inducted in 2025 to the National Academy of Construction for "pioneering and long-time distinguished service in mental health and suicide prevention".
