Ohio BMV Warns Residents about Text Message Scam
Among those being targeted was OSAP President & CEO Jarrod Clabaugh
The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is warning residents to beware of a text message scam falsely claiming to be from the BMV and demanding payment for traffic violations.
According to the BMV, Ohioans have reported receiving text messages saying they have an outstanding traffic ticket and must pay immediately to avoid having their driver’s license suspended. The messages include links and are part of a phishing scam intended to steal personal and financial information, the BMV said.
“If you receive this text, do not fall for this scam,” said Ohio BMV Registrar Charlie Norman. “Do not click any links and delete the text. Ohio BMV will never send you a text demanding payment or requesting your personal information.”
